Summer Chaos & The Big Idea
It was the month of June — schools were closed, summer vacations had begun, and the kids were home all day. Summer vacations often feel like a big question mark in every parent’s mind: What are we going to do with the kids all the time? How do we answer the dreaded, “I’m bored. What should I do?”Honestly, we don’t always have a solution. After swimming classes, park visits, playdates, and everything else we could think of, we suddenly thought — why not visit Walt Disney World in Florida ? While most people plan a Disney trip years in advance, we decided to take a chance and just go for it.
Yes, I know — Florida summers are crazy… mad crazy! However, the trip had already been discussed, and we were determined to make the most of it. Flights booked. Hotels booked. Park tickets booked as well. Now, the question was: how do we beat the heat to enjoy every moment?
Research & Planning: The Key to Success
I am not lying when I say that I researched a lot — about the temperatures, what to carry, how to stay hydrated, how to enjoy all the rides, which rides are worth it, and where to eat.
So, here is a cheat sheet to answer all those questions and enjoy your trip without much worry.
Flights: Planning Ahead
The first thing on our agenda was flights. Summer is peak season, so prices can be high — but if you’re okay with paying a bit more, go for it, sometimes a little extra is worth it.
Round-trip tickets from Houston to Florida cost approximately $1100–$1200 for three people.
Hotels at Walt Disney World : Practical Over Luxury
Secondly, hotels — we didn’t focus on the most luxurious options, as most of our time would be spent at the parks. Instead, we chose an affordable, super clean, and comfortable 4-star hotel.
- We booked a Wyndham Disney hotel, which is part of the park community.
- Staying in Disney-affiliated hotels comes with perks like early park entry.
- For five nights, it cost us $600.
Walt Disney World Park Tickets: Choosing Your Adventure
Now, the park tickets. Disney has four themed parks:
- Magic Kingdom Park
- EPCOT
- Disney’s Hollywood Studios
- Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park
There are different combo offers on the website. Ultimately, we chose Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, and Hollywood Studios. Tickets cost $450 per person (normal queues for rides).
Beating the Walt Disney World (Florida) Heat
Before we left, we were aware of the soaring temperatures. Therefore, we packed light-colored, loose clothing — shorts, tees, and dresses — which were perfect for the heat. Comfortable, well-supported shoes were essential due to all the walking.
Additionally, sudden rain showers are common, so light ponchos are a must. Amazon sells them at a much lower price than the parks, where they often cost double.
Sunscreen is non-negotiable — carry both body sunscreen and a face sunscreen with an SPF of at least 50. A few supplements can also help, such as:
- Vitamin C for immune support
- Electrolytes to stay hydrated
- Basic medicines
Mini portable fans are true saviors in the heat and are easily available online.
Also, carry extra batteries or a power bank for your phone. Extra snacks like protein bars and fruits come in handy, especially during long queues.
If traveling with kids, make sure they know basic safety info and are equipped with an AirTag or smartwatch for peace of mind.
Most importantly, keep yourself hydrated. Even if you don’t feel thirsty, sip water — with or without electrolytes — throughout the day. That’s exactly how we survived temperatures of 80–90°F.
There are plenty of spots inside the parks to refill water bottles for free, easily found using the Disney app. Otherwise, bottled water is available at cafés and restaurants throughout the park.
Planning Your Day: Strategy & Apps
To make the most of your visit, it’s wise to plan ahead and familiarize yourself with the parks. Each park has four to five marquee attractions that draw the longest lines and are considered must-do experiences. Therefore, aim to enjoy these first.
Guests staying at Disney Resort hotels or affiliated partner hotels benefit from early park entry, granting access 30 minutes ahead of standard rope drop. Even then, lines can be long, so arrive early. Moreover, transportation to the parks should be arranged in advance through the My Disney Experience app for a seamless start.
Meet the Characters & Capture Memories at Walt Disney World
Across all parks, you may encounter multiple characters — either casually strolling through their themed areas or appearing at designated meet-and-greet locations. So, if you are a fan or visiting with kids, do not miss the opportunity to take photos and collect autographs.
Autograph books are available for purchase and make wonderful keepsakes. Truly, this is one experience worth embracing — don’t skip it.
Real-Time Planning with My Disney Experience App
Another standout feature of the app is real-time wait times for attractions. While estimates may not always be perfectly precise, they generally provide a good indication of crowd levels. By monitoring wait times, guests can plan strategically, minimize queue time, and prioritize attractions efficiently.
Magic Kingdom:The park is thoughtfully divided into distinct themed areas: Main Street, U.S.A., Adventureland, Frontierland, Liberty Square, Fantasyland, and Tomorrowland. Each land offers a rich mix of attractions, immersive experiences, character encounters, and iconic sights — including the enchanting Cinderella Castle, lively parades, and interactive shows. For younger guests, especially little girls, there is a dedicated princess makeover boutique (Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique), where fairy-tale transformations bring Disney magic vividly to life.
